Self Confidence

February 9, 2014

Have you ever been told…

“Be persistent!  Just keep going!  Never give up hope!  Just be patient.  Don’t stop now!  You’re almost there!  Perseverance is what you need! See, you did it!!!  Congrats on being persistent!  I knew you could do it!!!  I had all the faith in you!”

Did you believe them?

Maybe you didn’t need to believe them because you already knew you possessed what it took deep inside you.  Like an innate intuition, a sixth sense, a gut feeling, a deeper devotion, a strong belief in all things possible, a desire to succeed, a dedication to the task at hand, a determination to prove to yourself as well as to others that you could, in fact, do what you said you were going to do.  Perhaps you didn’t need their belief because you had enough confidence in yourself.  Yet, it made you feel good as it gave you a sense of someone rooting in your corner, boosting you up in your down moments, and hopping up and down as they join you in celebrating your accomplishments.  Of course, sometimes it just sounds great to have someone notice, pay attention, and say out loud what you’ve been thinking all along.  It’s like a brief realization that reality is happening, you are not living a dream, and you don’t have to ask anyone to pinch you awake into some other dimensional existence.  Hearing it from others only affirms our own self-confidence and increases our level of courage.

Kids Need It Too!

See, our children learn from us.  For them to have the confidence, the best place for them to learn it starts with you, as the parent or the adult.  You don’t need to hear it from others.  You need to hear it the most often from yourself – say it out loud with ENTHUSIASM!!!!

I can do it!  I can do it!

Yes, I can!  Yes, I can!

I can do anything!

I can do everything!

Yes, I can!  Yes, I can!

I can do it!  I can do it!

Sing It Loud!  Sing It Proud!

Interestingly enough, I started singing this song around the house simply as part of my Think and Grow Rich experience in the Go90Grow program to build self-confidence for me,  Next thing I know, my kiddos are running around the house screaming the same tune at the top of their lungs!  It’s amazingly beautiful to hear the confidence in their tone and the pride in their voice as they shout, “I CAN DO ANYTHING!!”

It’s even funnier when they do it around their school teachers, strangers, and other parents.  You can see the looks cross their adult faces like “Oh, what a spoiled brat.  They can’t do everything they want!  Their parents must let them get away with everything.”  It’s a brief moment of smugness as people confuse their positive mental attitude regarding their abilities as one of the typical disrespectful tot who would rather push the envelope than follow instructions.  Mind you, my children are not 100% obedient by any means, but these words only cross their lips when they are faced with a challenge – tying their shoes, zipping their jacket, catching a ball, or whatever puzzle is plaguing their young mind.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!  YES, YOU CAN!!!

So, just remember, you can do ANYTHING!  You can do EVERYTHING!  YES, YOU CAN!  YOU CAN DO IT!!!  Don’t let anyone tell you different, but most of all, remind the younger generations in your life that they can do it too!!!
